Lysozyme, also known as muramidase, is an alkaline enzyme that hydrolyzes peptidoglycans in pathogenic bacteria. It cleaves the β-1,4 glycosidic bonds between N-acetylmuramic acid and N-acetylglucosamine in the cell wall, breaking down insoluble peptidoglycans into soluble glycopeptides, causing cell wall rupture and bacterial lysis. It is commonly used for total RNA extraction from bacteria and for DNA extraction from Gram-positive bacteria that are difficult to lyse, ensuring sufficient cell disruption and nucleic acid release. Its characteristics include: 1. Heat resistance; 2. Resistance to complete inactivation by organic solvents; 3. Stable activity; 4. Broad-spectrum antibacterial properties; 5. Effective as a preservative.
