The S17-1 λpir strain is deficient in endonuclease (endA1), improving the yield and quality of plasmid DNA. It is also defective in recombinase (recA1), reducing the probability of homologous recombination of inserted fragments and ensuring the stability of inserted DNA. Tn7 confers weak streptomycin resistance to this strain.
