This strain has an Ach5-type background and contains a rifampicin resistance gene (rif) as a selection marker in its nuclear genome. To facilitate transformation, it carries an octopine-type Ti plasmid pAL4404 that lacks self-transfer function. This plasmid contains vir genes (which are essential for T-DNA insertion into the plant genome). Although the T-DNA transfer function of pAL4404 is disrupted, it assists in the efficient transfer of the T-DNA from the introduced binary vector. The pAL4404 Ti plasmid contains a streptomycin resistance marker (strep), conferring streptomycin resistance to the LBA4404 strain. It is suitable for genetic transformation of plants such as tobacco and tomato.
