Dihydroethidium (DHE) is a commonly used fluorescent probe for live cell labeling. Once taken up by live cells, DHE is dehydrogenated by intracellular superoxide anions to produce ethidium. Ethidium (e.g., ethidium bromide) binds to RNA or DNA and emits red fluorescence, allowing detection of superoxide anion levels by measuring fluorescence intensity.
