Oil Red O, also known as Sudan Red 5B, is a lipophilic azo dye that specifically stains neutral lipids such as triglycerides in cells or tissues, while staining phospholipids and steroids weakly. The principle is that Oil Red O dissolves in lipids, giving them a red to orange-red color.
